Light penetration and light intensity in sandy marine sediments measured with irradiance and scalar irradiance fiber-optic microprobes

چکیده

Fiber-optic microprobes for determining irradiance and scalar irradiance were used for light measurements in sandy sediments of different particle size. Intense scattering caused a maximum integral light intensity [photon scalar ~rradiance, E"(400 to 700 nm) and Eo(700 to 880 nm)] at the sediment surface ranging from 180% of incident collimated light in the coarsest sediment (250 to 500 pm grain size) up to 280% in the finest sediment (<63 pm grain m e ) . The thickness of the upper sediment layer in which scalar irradiance was higher than the incident quantum flux on the sediment surface increased with grain size from <0.3 mm in the f~nest o > 1 mm in the coarsest sediments. Below 1 mm, light was attenuated exponentially with depth in all sediments. Light attenuation coefficients decreased with increasing particle size, and infrared light penetrated deeper than visible light in all sediments. Attenuation spectra of scalar irradiance exhibited the strongest attenuation at 450 to 500 nm, and a continuous decrease in attenuation coefficent towards the longer wavelengths was observed. Measurements of downwelling irradiance underestimated the total quantum flux available. i.e. scalar irradiance, by > 100% throughout the sediment. Attenuation coefficents of scalar irradiance, downwering irradiance and upwelling irradiance were, however, similar in deeper sediment layers where the light fleld became more diffuse. Our results demonstrate the importance of measuring scalar irradiance when the role of light in photobiological processes in sedirnents, e.g. microbenthic photosynthesis, is investigated.

Optical microsensors for analysis of microbial communities.

Fiber-optic microprobes connected to sensitive light meters are ideal tools to resolve the steep gradients of light intensity and spectral composition that prevail in aggregates and surface-associated microbial communities in sediments, biofilms, and microbial mats. They allow for a detailed mapping of light fields and enable insights to the complex optical properties of such highly light-scatt...

Light microclimate of endolithic phototrophs in the scleractinian corals Montipora monasteriata and Porites cylindrica

The light microclimate of phototrophic endoliths growing within the scleractinian corals Porites cylindrica and Montipora monasteriata was described by scalar irradiance microprobe measurements within different layers of the coral skeleton. Characterisation of the pigments in individual layers was done by reflectance spectroscopy with fibre-optic radiance microprobes. The spectral measurements ...

EFFECTS OF SALT AND IRRADIANCE STRESS ON PHOTOSYNTHETIC PIGMENTS AND PROTEINS IN DUNALIELLA SALINA TEODORESCO

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of salinity and light intensity on the chlorophylls, ?-carotene and protein contents in Dunaliella salina Teod. The algae were grown in inorganic medium containing 0, 0.9, 1.8 (control), 2.6 and 3.5 M NaCl under three illumination regimens [4500 (control), 9000 and 11000 Lux]. The results showed that most electrophoresis protein bands were separa...

Light gradients and optical microniches in coral tissues

Light quantity and quality are among the most important factors determining the physiology and stress response of zooxanthellate corals. Yet, almost nothing is known about the light field that Symbiodinium experiences within their coral host, and the basic optical properties of coral tissue are unknown. We used scalar irradiance microprobes to characterize vertical and lateral light gradients w...

Photosynthetic Acclimation of Symbiodinium in hospite Depends on Vertical Position in the Tissue of the Scleractinian Coral Montastrea curta

Coral photophysiology has been studied intensively from the colony scale down to the scale of single fluorescent pigment granules as light is one of the key determinants for coral health. We studied the photophysiology of the oral and aboral symbiont band of scleractinian coral Montastrea curta to investigate if different acclimation to light exist in hospite on a polyp scale. By combined use o...
